What is Graphic Design?
Graphic design is the process and art of combining text and graphics and communicating an effective message in the design of logos, graphics, brochures, newsletters, posters, signs, and any other type of visual communication.
Graphic design plays an important role in so many aspects of our world today. From packaging and posters to web sites and logos, graphic designers create it all. With an eye for great design aesthetics, high school CTE students develop their creative vision with the help of the Graphic and Advertising Design Course.
Get a better understanding of the basics of graphic design by studying the elements and principles of graphic design that govern effective design and page layout. Designers achieve their goals by utilizing the elements and principles of graphic design.
Student in this course will combine skills in design, writing, strategic planning and branding to develop integrated marketing campaigns in a wide range of media to reach and influence specific target audiences.

Students will...
Communicate verbally and in writing on topics related to Advertising & Graphic Design with appropriate use of technical language.
Design visual composition and stylistic treatments to meet client objectives utilizing the design process.
Effectively use industry standard techniques, equipment and software.
Create page layouts that attract attention through creative use of design elements and principles.
Select color schemes that support the communications objectives of the project.
Acquire and prepare appropriate imagery or graphics that enhance the communications message.
Select and use typography that is both functional (readability) and expressive in a style which meets design goals.
Produce digital output files correctly prepared for publishing to print.
Create web site pages formatted using correctly functioning HTML with Cascading Style Sheets.

This course consists of approximately 216 hours of classroom instruction over a two year period and is part of the GST BOCES Digital Media Arts Career and Technical Education program for high school Juniors and Seniors.
